Upton Hall and St Anselm’s run their own tests on their own dates. Check with each school.
How the year runs
In most areas you register your child for the test in the spring or summer of Year 5. Registration windows are short, often four to six weeks, and most areas take no late entries, so the closing date is the one to put in the calendar.
The test itself is usually sat in September, in the first weeks of Year 6. Results come in October, before the 31 October deadline, so you know the outcome when you fill in the application. A pass makes a child eligible; places still go by each school’s own admissions rules.
Not every area keeps to that pattern. Gloucestershire moves its test to July of Year 5 from 2027, Lincolnshire opened registration in January last year, and Bexley in March. That is why it is worth finding your own area above rather than going by what a friend elsewhere did.
If your area is not here
We list an area once we can read its dates on its own council, consortium or school page. Some, including Birmingham, Trafford, Shropshire with Walsall and Wolverhampton, Plymouth and Bromley, publish them in places we could not yet confirm, so they are left out rather than guessed at. Your council’s secondary admissions page will tell you which grammar schools are near you and who runs their test.
