Perimeter and missing lengths for the 11 plus

A rectangle 12 by 8 has a corner cut out, 4 by 3. Does the perimeter get smaller? The rule to remember: perimeter is a walk, not a space.

    How to see it

Perimeter is the distance round the outside. Walk round it and add every side. A rectangle has two lengths and two widths. For L-shapes, find the missing sides first by using what you know: the totals must match.

    A worked example

Slide the notch's sides across. The two sides of the notch together are the same distance as the two sides they replaced. The notch just changes the route, not the length. The perimeter is still 2 times 12 plus 8, 40.

The common mistake: subtracting the cut-out from the perimeter

The trap is taking the notch off, 4 plus 3, to get 33. That treats the cut like lost area. Perimeter is a walk, so trace the actual edge, and the walk is just as long.

    Try one

The perimeter of a rectangle is 36 centimetres. The length is 11. What is the width?

    1. A25
    2. B7
    3. C14
    4. D18
    Show the answer

    Right: B, 7

Half the perimeter is 18, take away 11.
