Division for the 11 plus

728 divided by 7. Is it 14 or 104? The rule to remember: every digit needs an answer above it.

    How to see it

Division is sharing, or asking how many lots fit. For one digit, use short division, the bus stop. Work left to right, and put any leftover across as a little digit in front of the next one. For two digits, list the multiples first and use them like a menu. With a remainder, write the leftover in the answer: r 6.

    A worked example

    7 into 7 goes once. 7 into 2 will not go, so write 0 and carry 2. 7 into 28 goes 4. So 104. Check: 104 times 7 is 728.

The common mistake: forgetting the zero in the answer

The trap is skipping the zero. If 7 will not go into 2, you must still write a 0 in the answer, or the digits slide and you get 14. Every digit on top needs an answer digit above it.

    Try one

    618 divided by 6.

    1. A13
    2. B103
    3. C113
    4. D130
    Show the answer

    Right: B, 103

    6 into 6 is 1, into 1 is 0 carry 1, into 18 is 3.
