Multiplication tables for the 11 plus

Seven eights. Quick! If you hesitated, you are in good company. It is one of the hardest facts there is. The rule to remember: build the facts you cannot remember.

    Arithmetic, topic 4 of 8 · 2 minute video

    How to see it

You do not need to remember all 144 facts. Learn the ones you can build. Nines: ten lots, take one lot. Seven nines is seventy take seven, 63. Twelves: ten lots plus two lots. Five, eight, six, seven: 5, 6, 7, 8, so 56 is 7 times 8. And the square numbers help you: 8 times 8 is 64.

    A worked example

    12 times 7. Ten sevens is 70, two sevens is 14. 70 plus 14 is 84.

The common mistake: mixing up neighbouring facts

The trap is mixing neighbouring facts. 7 times 8 is 56, but 6 times 9 is 54, and 7 times 9 is 63 while 8 times 8 is 64. If your answer is one away from a square, double check.

    Try one

    12 times 8.

    1. A86
    2. B96
    3. C88
    4. D104
    Show the answer
